FOLKLORE was an exhibition curated by Toad Lickers Collective at Newhaven’s Marine Workshops between 27.03.25-12.04.25. It brought together over 80 artists from across the UK to investigate the revival of folk customs, rituals and aesthetics. The exhibition text:

As our culture changes more rapidly than ever - through transient TikTok micro-trends, neo sub-genres and remixes upon remixes - ancient traditions, old wives tales and fairy stories remain as spectres of influence.

The artists in FOLKLORE each have their own interpretations of what folk culture means, and how it combines and converges with more modern experiences, but most agree that the fundamental language of folk, built on authentic community connections, is invaluable to navigating society today.

While these foundations are pure, folk undoubtedly does need a remix, as our understandings of and relationships to country and borders develop. FOLKLORE is interested in looking at folk as a methodology for grassroots storytelling, making together and interweaving threads of knowledge without top-down interference.
